A four-season winter camping tent is absolutely necessary if you plan on camping in extreme cold or winter weather. Winter camping tents do cost a little more than 3-season style tents, but the heftier construction and added protection from the elements are well worth the cost if you want to camp more often in the winter weather. Of course a trade off for all this protection from the elements will translate to a heavier tent than the 3 season versions, but the weight is not significant if you factor in the extra warmth it provides.
